As part of the Erasmus+ project, participants took part in a mobility in Larissa, where they deepened their knowledge of various aspects of sustainability through a comprehensive, experience-based program. The aim was not only for students to acquire theoretical knowledge, but also to understand the importance of a sustainable lifestyle through hands-on experiences.
Day 1 – Sustainability in the Urban Environment
The participants arrived in Larissa and were warmly welcomed by the host school. The program began with a city tour, during which students explored the city from a sustainability perspective.
Particular attention was given to:
- the role of green spaces and parks,
- the reduction of the urban heat island effect,
- and the preservation of biodiversity.
During the tour, the topic of responsible tourism was also addressed. Students reflected on how cultural and natural sites can be visited in an environmentally friendly way.
Day 2 – Cultural Heritage and Sustainability
On the second day, participants visited Makrinitsa in the Pelion mountains, where they explored traditional architecture and the use of local materials.
As part of the program:
- they observed how settlements adapt to natural conditions,
- and recognized the importance of sustainable living in sensitive natural environments.
At the Diachronic Museum, it became clear that the protection of cultural heritage is also an important component of sustainable development.
A key element of the day was a composting workshop, where students learned the basics of the circular economy and organic waste management.
Day 3 – Sustainable Agriculture and Biodiversity
The third day focused on sustainable agriculture.
Participants:
- visited an agricultural school,
- gained insight into local production processes,
- and discussed the importance of soil and water protection.
During a herb walk, students became familiar with regional plant species and learned the principles of responsible foraging.
The day concluded with a cooking workshop, where they prepared dishes using local and seasonal ingredients, discovering the importance of short supply chains.
Day 4 – Nature and Tourism
On the fourth day, participants visited the Meteora monasteries and experienced the interaction between nature and cultural heritage.
As part of the program:
- they discussed the impacts of mass tourism,
- as well as the importance of responsible visitor behavior.
Students realized that sustainable tourism requires a balance between accessibility and protection.
Day 5 – Practical Sustainability
The final day was focused on hands-on activities.
Participants:
- took part in a tree-planting activity in the Erasmus Park,
- created natural cosmetic products (e.g., organic soap, toothpaste),
- and learned the basics of ecological farming in a permaculture garden.
In an upcycling workshop, they created new products from recycled materials, putting the principle of “waste as a resource” into practice.
Conclusion
During the mobility, participants not only expanded their knowledge but also developed a stronger environmental awareness.
The program contributed to:
- promoting sustainable thinking,
- developing practical skills,
- and strengthening the willingness to actively support sustainability in their own environment.
The mobility in Larissa was therefore not only a valuable learning experience but also had a lasting impact on the participants.
