How Students Created a Mini Dictionary
Sustainability is a concept that goes far beyond environmental protection. It represents the responsible use of resources, social justice, and economic stability. Within the framework of German language instruction, this multifaceted concept was used as the starting point for a creative and cross-linguistic activity that not only raised awareness of sustainability but also promoted linguistic diversity and intercultural communication.
The Concept of the Task
The teacher began the lesson by writing the word “Nachhaltigkeit” (sustainability) in large letters on the board. The students’ task was to find a new word for each letter of the term. These words were meant to be thematically connected in some way to sustainability and its principles. It was not necessary for the words to be direct translations; rather, they were intended to expand the concept through their meanings and associations.
A Creative Process
The students gave free rein to their creativity. For the letter “N,” some chose “Natur” (nature), while others selected “Nachdenken” (reflection). The letter “A” was often associated with “Alternativen” (alternatives) or “Aktion” (action), while “C” was linked to “Chancen” (opportunities). The lesson became not only a linguistic exercise but also an opportunity for thematic discussion. Students exchanged ideas about the values and perspectives they associate with sustainability and how these might be interpreted in different cultures.
Translation into Greek
After completing their list of words, the next step was to translate them into Greek.

It was shared with partner schools participating in the Erasmus project, which were invited to contribute creatively as well. Students in those schools were tasked with translating the German terms into their own languages and enriching them further.
