The second day of the educational exchange programme organised by the 1st Experimental High School of Larissa, in which the delegations of the schools Liceo Scientifico Statale Enrico Fermi from Siakka, Italy, SOŠ polytechnická Ul. SNP2 from Zlaté Moravce, Slovakia, and Nyíregyházi Evangélikus Kossuth Lajos Gimnázium from Hungary participated, started with enthusiasm and impatience.

Meeting in the morning and departure to Makrinitsa

The students and accompanying teachers met at the school in the morning and travelled by bus to the traditional and stately Portaria, one of the most characteristic settlements of Pelion. Although the weather was rainy, the programme and the atmosphere did not change.

Hiking and herb picking

The day began with a hike along the paths of the area, which have retained their traditional character and exude a special atmosphere of tranquillity and natural harmony. Under the guidance of expert guides and herbalists, participants had the opportunity to identify, collect and study the herbs of Pelion – such as oregano, thyme, sage and lemon balm – and learn about their beneficial properties and their use in folk medicine and modern herbal therapy.

Laboratory for the production of medicinal oils – ESTIA PILION

The next stop was the innovative Estia Pilion centre, where the students actively participated in an experiential workshop on the production of medicinal herbal oils. The youngsters had the opportunity to follow step by step the process of extracting and preparing natural oils, experimenting with combinations and creating their own small vials to take home as souvenirs. It was an experience that combined knowledge of nature with practice, while offering a flavour of the rich tradition of natural healing in this region.

Lunch on the beach at Agria

At lunchtime, the group travelled to Agria beach near Volos to have lunch and relax. The students had the opportunity to savour local delicacies by the sea and share their impressions of the day, forging friendships across borders and languages.

Back to Larissa

The day ended with the return to Larissa, full of images, flavours and knowledge. It was an experience that not only enhanced understanding of the local natural and cultural heritage, but also promoted intercultural dialogue through shared discovery and learning.
