The Sustainable Classroom of the 1st Experimental Gymnasium of Larisa is a highly innovative initiative that highlights the school’s effort to integrate sustainability into the core of the educational process. It was created in the school’s attic, a space that until recently had remained unused, and was transformed into a dynamic learning environment that promotes knowledge, environmental awareness, collaboration, and emotional well-being.
The classroom is not merely an aesthetic redesign but a comprehensive pedagogical model aiming to connect the theory of sustainability with everyday practice. The school, adopting the concept that the learning space functions as a “third teacher,” has created an environment that supports the development of essential 21st-century skills while fostering a sense of community and active participation within the school community.
The implementation of the Sustainable Classroom was a multifaceted process combining technical work, creative thinking, and collaborative action. Initially, the attic was thoroughly cleaned, materials were sorted, unnecessary items were recycled, and suitable ones were selected for upcycling.
The choice of materials and colors was guided by ecological principles, while the construction of shelves, furniture, and decorative elements from pallets and recycled wood contributed to a natural and warm atmosphere. LED lighting was installed to ensure energy efficiency and create a calm environment, while the addition of indoor plants enhanced both aesthetics and air quality.
The photographic documentation of the process highlighted not only the functional transformation of the space but also its pedagogical value as a collective project.
The Sustainable Classroom has been fully integrated into the school’s international and environmental initiatives, serving as a space for preparation, creation, and documentation of projects carried out במסגרת Erasmus+ and Eco-Schools programs. Meetings, workshops, presentations, and preparation of materials for international collaborations take place here.
The space provides the appropriate equipment and atmosphere for creating posters, digital presentations, artistic works, and experiential outputs that showcase the school’s environmental activities at a European level.
The existence of this classroom strengthens the school’s profile as a center of innovation and sustainability, offering an additional advantage in evaluation and certification processes.
