This is the sustainability room in our school in Nyíregyháza, Hungary.
1. Introduction and Objectives – How did the idea of a sustainable classroom arise?
As part of the Erasmus+ project “Shaping the Future Together – Contributing to a Sustainable World and Driving Change,” our school set the goal of creating a modern, sustainable, and inspiring classroom. The starting point was the understanding that students and teachers need a learning environment that is healthy, modern, motivating, and environmentally friendly in the long term.
The plan for this classroom emerged from a joint brainstorming process involving students and teachers, based on the intensive work, research, and exchanges during the first 1 to 1.5 years of the project. This led to the goal of implementing the school’s already existing sustainable developments—such as solar panels, geothermal ventilation, and greywater reuse—at the classroom level as well.
The sustainable classroom is located in Building B, which is already recognized as an environmentally conscious and modern part of the school. Even the approach to the classroom is designed to raise awareness: the stairs feature German motivational sayings for the students, and informative posters in the corridor convey the basic principles of sustainability.
2. Process Description – Implementation Steps and Preparations
The transformation of the classroom is a complex process, in which sustainability criteria play a key role. The work is scheduled to continue until August 30, 2025.
The main measures include:
- Floor renewal: Replacement of the old flooring with environmentally friendly, low-VOC materials.
- Wall painting: Use of allergy-friendly and eco-conscious paints to ensure better air quality and a healthy learning environment.
- Installation of green plant walls: Moss or plant walls improve air quality, enhance concentration, and create a nature-connected atmosphere.
- Energy-efficient door installation: To minimize heat loss.
- New ergonomic furniture: Tables and chairs made from environmentally friendly materials that support healthy posture.
- Preparatory work: Clearing out the room, sustainably reusing or recycling old furniture, and involving students in the choice of colors, furniture, and overall design.
3. Final Product and Use of the Sustainable Classroom
The completed sustainable classroom will be a modern, natural, healthy, and energy-efficient learning space that serves multiple functions:
- A regular teaching space where students can learn in a healthy and inspiring environment.
- A space for project meetings and Erasmus+ activities, where international partners can observe good practices.
- A venue for presentations, workshops, and thematic events, particularly focused on sustainability.
- A living example of environmental awareness, where students can directly experience how green solutions work.
Even the areas surrounding the classroom—the stairs with German motivational sayings and sustainability-related informational posters—are pedagogically impactful from the first moment. In this way, the classroom becomes not only a place of learning but a holistic sustainability experience for all who use it.
